Around The Buoys
After David left Sailing World Magazine in 1985, he started writing a monthly column in the magazine called "Around The Buoys." This popular feature, which lasted for four years, covered a wide range of topics to help sailors improve their racing results. The articles have been out of print for 20 years, but much of the advice is still relevant and valuable today.
Smallboat Sailing
While David was working as an editor at Sailing World Magazine in the 1980s, he was asked by Sports Illustrated to write a book on sailing for their series of Winner's Circle Books on different sports. The result was a 240-page book called Smallboat Sailing, published in 1990 with lots of photos and illustrations by Dave's brother Brad. The book is written to cover the basics of sailing with a bias on performance and how to sail your boat "right", whether you are daysailing or racing. Though the book is no longer in print, the chapters reprinted here may be of interest to many sailors.
The FAST Course
When David was the marketing director for North Sails Inc. in the late 1980s and early 1990s, one of his projects was a complete rewrite of the North U course books (which accompanied the popular North U seminars). Here are the chapters that David wrote for the Fast Course manual. The information in this book helped thousands of sailors race faster around the course. These materials are currently out of print, but they are available here in the Speed & Smarts Subscribers' Corner.
